A Smoother Street View
July 28, 2010

Street Slide stitches together slices from multiple panoramas, making it possible to see all the shops on a street at once. (Microsoft Research)
New street-level imaging software developed by Microsoft could help people find locations more quickly on the Web.
Microsoft researchers have come up with a refinement to Bing Streetside called Street Slide. It combines slices from multiple panoramas captured along a stretch of road into one continuous view. This can be viewed from a distance, or “smooth scrolled” sideways.
Someone using Street Slide’s panoramic view can slide along the facades looking for places of interest, and zoom back in to a classic bubble view at any time. A user can also flip the viewpoint to see the other side of the street, or turn corners onto new streets.

@OscarGonzalez Have you used Google Streetview?!!? Everything is so up close, and you cannot see the bigger picture of the streets. Harder to visualize what the street will look like when I’m driving than MS’s approach where it presents you with the wider idth view from the side. This gives me a better idea to what to look for to see if I’m in the right area.

I’m not sure I understand what “context” she’s talking about when she says current solutions are missing “it”. Also, the “zoom” out and back into a specific bubble seems to be the same thing as we currently have with other solutions except they call it something different… typical Microsoft. What is really interesting to me is to see if they’ve borrowed from their photosynth technology to a point where we’ll see a more recent view of street view fed by peoples latest pictures of the area.
