I disagree, type 2 diabetes is brought on by patient behaviour, type 1 is not! Type 2 is less sensitive to daily life such as exercise, eating etc. Some type 1s have little or no room for unmeasured movement from routine, they need some help and this could be the breakthrough that changes their lives forever. Here's hoping.

Reply to WLGJR Certain kinds of "meditation" can make the variations of emotion and glandular hormones conscious and under control, But being cool, under control and balanced only pays off in long run survival pf all dangers. giving in to "chemistry",instincts, moods. and emotions pays off in animal joy, excitement and energy. Most people don't care to seek control of all body chemistery such as emotions. A gadget to control insulin is good enough. Electronic gadgetry is advancing !

Many groups are working on programs to control insulin pump infusions according to glucose levels measured by continuous monitoring of glucose by a small glucose needle electrode placed under the skin and changed every three days. The problems are that the glucose needle electrode does not measure glucose actually i n the blood, and the insulin is also injected under the skin and not into the blood stream, but most importantly it is not easy to derive formulas (programs) that tell how much insulin to infuse in relation to the changes to glucose being measured.

If this type of system improve even further, we can soon develop artificial brain stems.
Better reflex, better control of our emotions, better control of secretion of adrenaline and other improvements.

In the UK it is estimated that the direct cost of Diabetes 1 to our NHS in 2010 was £1.8bn, (£11bn for type 2) source given below. Similar costs must be experienced elsewhere in the world. There is also the misery for the sufferer and worry for the families. Both factors must make the bringing of this wonderful system to market, in the fastest possible time, a priority. Too often diabetes treatment gets buried in the testing due to the legal worries, ignoring the huge benefits to the patients.

An 8 fold reduction in Hypoglycemia and automatic control is a major achievement in the management of Type ! Diabetes. I hope this product is affordable and is licensed to become available in the market, soon.
To the Researchers: Thanks for extending the power of artificial pancreas.
