I was thinking the same thing. When I saw the headline I thought, "Hmm... kind of like those floating laser guided bots in the Prometheus movie." Ahh, that Ridley Scott is always ahead of us. But.. maybe not so far ahead this time.

This has great applications for mapping of Caves. Mapping normally takes so much time, but is critical for understanding where to explore next underground.

It also reminded me of this kickstarter.com project here http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1108292587/99-lidar-project

A more practical application would be for blind people. Coupled with a Siri assistant, it could give navigational instructions, being particularly useful in transportation hubs or other public spaces that can be almost maze like.

Aside from the obvious utility of such a system, there's a coolness factor that I'm sure will lead to its being used in a lot more than just search-and-rescue operations. It's like the automap feature in a video game come to life. Combining something like this with other technologies could lead to some fascinating augmented-reality dungeon crawls, for instance.

And while the article focuses on non-robotic explorers, integrating and miniaturizing the system so that it can be mounted on any kind of explorer, human, animal, or otherwise, would make for easier comprehensive mapping of caves, shipwrecks and reef systems, and even pipes and ductwork. Lots of potential for archaeologists, spelunkers, repair crews and just about anybody who wants to see a bit farther than their own bodies will safely permit.
