Best Buy Co. Inc.’s decision to use its Super Bowl ad to spotlight innovators who helped change how cell phones are used (and snuck itself onto the list) was received pretty well, at least by media types.
Cnet called it the best tech-centered ad of the first half of the game. It featured people like Philippe Kahn, who built one of the first camera phones, and Kevin Systrom, who developed the Instagram photo app.
The New York Times liked it too, and in Adweek’s live-blog of the ads, John Butler, executive creative director at Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners, gave the spot from Best Buy “huge credit for a consumer electronics retailer that understands that spending 30 seconds spewing price points and products is a waste of money.” [...]
