Do you think that Lupus might be treatable soon, like before the end of this decade or the end of the next one? My sister has Lupus, and there’s been very little progress made in the treatment of the disease during her lifetime. The only real advance has been the prohibitively expensive Benlysta.

In vitro only, at the moment.

In vivo gene therapy still needs an appropriate vector. This method uses smaller molecules, so liposomes could be used, but they have the disadvantage of being non-discriminatory and very localized to the injection site.

Nevertheless, this is a VERY important breakthrough. Zinc-fingers were not developed properly due to Sangamo’s greed and completely unethical patents (as is the case in biotech’s ridiculously all-encompassing patents).

This could be the key to one step in Aubrey de Grey’s SENS rejuvenation technology. Snip in a section of DNA that overdrives the cell cleanup of ‘junk’ from living several decades. Then snip the original bit back in after the six month ‘cleanse program’ is complete.

This one technique will change the face of medicine. Soon any malady will be reprogrammable. What even more exciting is the simplicity of the molecule. It should be relatively easy to print the from DNA printing machines. A tiny amount of material to affect the exact source of a disease process.

Just think, Howard Hughes started his Medical Institute as a tax dodge and now it’s doing some of the most important work in the world.

I was surrounded by constant interruptions while trying to read this article. Did anybody notice if this procedure has to be done only on cells in a dish, or can it be done throughout your body? I’m sitting here gasping from COPD that sprang from being an asthmatic surrounded by a smokers in the workplace. I’d sure like an inhaler that could snip out my defective lung genes and replace them with the genes of an Olympic swimming medalist — but without the marijuana, of course.
