— summary —

What if we were really good at making things — better products of all kind — in a clean way, at a very low cost, and on a global scale? What if today’s industrial + energy infra-structure could be replaced with clean, zero-carbon emission tech — at a rapid pace?

The result would be a profound revolution in the material basis of our civilization and radically different prospects for the 21st century. A tech of this scope + power is visible in the distance today, not close, but accessible through a series of advances in nanotechnology and the molecular sciences.

By merging digital and manufacturing principles at the molecular scale, atomically precise manufacturing can transform our world. It’s time to expand the horizons of our conversation about the future.

K. Eric Drexler PhD is a researcher at Oxford University. His writings focus on advanced nano-tech. His 1981 paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences established fundamental principles of:

  • molecular design
  • protein engineering
  • productive nano-systems

Drexler’s explores his fundamental ideas in his books:

book title: Engines of Creation:
deck: The coming era of nanotechnology.

written for a general audience

book title: Nanosystems
deck: molecular machinery, manufacturing, and computation

a quantitative, physics-based analysis.

He recently served as Chief Technical Consultant to the Technology Roadmap for Productive Nanosystems, a project of the Battelle Memorial Institute and its participating US National Laboratories. He is currently working in a collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund to explore nanotechnology-based solutions to global problems such as energy and climate change.

In addition to an updated look and feel for the ebook, Engines of Creation 2.0 has been expanded to include the first known lecture on nanotechnology by physicist Richard Feynman, the landmark open letter debate between Dr. Drexler and the late nanotech pioneer and Nobel laureate Dr. Richard Smalley, analysis of the debate by Ray Kurzweil, and a number of new additions by Dr. Drexler, including his advice to aspiring nanotechnologists.

Originally published in 1986, K. Eric Drexler’s Engines of Creation laid the theoretical foundation for the modern field of nanotechnology and articulated the amazing possibilities and dangers associated with engineering at the molecular scale. Unique for both its style and substance, the book is today recognized as the seminal work in nanotechnology and has earned Drexler the title of “Father of Nanotechnology.”

Ray Kurzweil, inventor, and author of several books, including the Singularity is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology, says, “Some seminal works stand out like beacons in the history of science. Newton’s Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica and Watson and Crick’s A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid come quickly to mind. In recent decades we can add Eric Drexler’s Engines of Creation, which established the revolutionary new field of nanotechnology.”

The publication of Engines of Creation 2.0 represents the first in a series of important intellectual works that WOWIO will be updating and distributing for free as ebooks. “WOWIO is dedicated to bringing the highest quality books to readers free of charge” says Dr. David B. Palumbo, CEO of WOWIO. “We are honored to partner with Dr. Drexler and other important members of the nanotechnology community to bring an update of this seminal work to the world through our platform.”

WOWIO employs patent-pending technology and targeted sponsorships to make high quality ebooks available on the Internet for free through its Web site.

WOWIO is today the only source where readers can legally download high-quality copyrighted ebooks from leading publishers for free. Readers have access to a wide range of offerings, including works of classic literature, college textbooks, comic books, and popular fiction and non-fiction titles.
