Kevin Costner's Waterworld road his wave from Dances With Wolves, at 175 million was pricey prior to the billion dollar establishment of the smaltz like Titanic and Pirates of the Caribbean. All on the water. If a dragonfly can glide along atop the water, why can't we? oh that's right, we are heavier than air so of course we can't fly.

And none of these architects and innovators have given a thought to where their food will be grown once sea level rise and flooding make life on land unsustainable? But then few city people appear to be aware of what food production entails, and just accept as read that food appears in their supermarket in such variety from all over the world as if by magic. Sorry, but this is as much a pipe dream as living forever.

Quite right AZryan. The hexagonal add on system was also suggested in tMarshall Savage's book Millenium Prohect. Ge did place the islands in deep water (3000ft+) because that way they could use tthe temperature differential between deep ocena nad surface water to generate fuel fre power. For that reason and also because you don't get hurricanes etc actually on the equator he placed them there. Sounds idtllic.

Probably looks better to show them totally surrounded by water, but seems like it would make more sense to just build them right off the shore and permanently attached to land.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to just have a barge/foundation platform design? Make it flat, rectangular (or hexagonal) and just keep attaching more as needed. Then you can just build whatever you want on top of it -according to whatever building specs it could handle. You'd keep ruining people's beachfront property, but it would function just like new, artificial land.

Seems like the idea of super-mega tower cities makes more sense though. Farming skyscrapers, etc. We are land mammals. You might be able to 'live' on a water city, but we'd probably want to get to land and go do stuff. Hasn't the movie Waterworld taught us anything??

It will be easier to green the deserts with desalinated water. There was an article here just a few weeks ago about using filters of graphene to remove salt from seawater.

I think Jacques Fresco's design work and concept for floating cities is quite a bit more ambitious and viable. Most of these seem only to be halfway.

This is one idea that I'll wait till they perfect. I wouldn't want to be in one during a category five hurricane..

I understand that the world will max out at 10 billion people....

I thought that pic was a designer shoe at first....

If you lived on a floating boat you would need one of these to play with... http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/openrov/openrov-the-open-source-underwater-robot?ref=activity

Doable actually, though probably on a larger scale - this one is roughly the size of a medium cruise liner, hardly able to be self-sustainable. There's still the challenge of making it maintainable without periodic drydocking.

Maybe a floating city made out of modular ship-sized components that detach and are replaced as needed? This is going to be hell from the viewpoint of structural integrity though, but with advances in material science, eventually someone will try. And of course a single success is enough to persuade many to invest in the field.
