Living in a more global world was predicted by the author John Naisbitt in his book "Megatrends in the late 1980s. " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Naisbitt when he articulated the trend of "Placelessness" He predicted that people could be geographically very far away from each other,
but continue, by virtue of media and communication, to "Feel" very close to each other. Enter videoapps, skype, and
webcams. I have on my "llist" on facebook a person I know very well who currently lives in Eastern Europe, and another I am getting
to know from India. Where we are has less to do with what we believe, what we know.
I maintain intense business contacts in Tokyo, Los Angeles, Barcelona, London, and Miami.
And where in world does this forum reside? Is it i the server which holds the forum or in the collectively melded in mind exchanges that occur here?

For some years now when you walk down the main street in my city the vast majority of people 80-90% are not of this land but foreigners.

At the same time 10-20% of my fellow country folk have left this nation for good. At the universities it is the same. In electrical school 90% of the students where foreign.

Really the "nation" I identify as my own has not existed in 40 years.

No human identifies with globalization as the world is too large for any of us to grasp. 1000 cities with 1,000,000 or more greater urban population.

What we perceive as a global identity is a falsehood. Augmented reality can go a small way to overcome this but by then the virtual environment will be even greater than the global one and we will be global victims of "virtualization".

Globalization = a global civilization

I think the point of the "megatrends" thinker naisbitt, is NOT that our communities will be destroyed by globalization,
that in fact, that our core communities will be preserved and cherished by technology. I mean, the automobile
allowed a family to locate hundreds of miles from home, and still drive home on holidays to connect with each
other. A computer and a smart phone, enhance this on a huge scale.
I heard a woman waiting in line to pick up a pie for christmas, talking with her daughter over the phone "go into
your bedroom, and sit there until I get home" We will talk when I get there.

Punishment and communitarian indoctrination was about to take place. The "place" she came from
had nothing to do with what the mother was doing, and very efficiently so . Bringing her daughter up to
speed to what it means to be a member of the community I or "we" live in. I was grateful for her insistance and
her efficiency in doing this using "modern" technology.
The point of the call has been around for hundreds of years. Parents are charged with bringing their
children into the civilized world. To know how to behave with and around others.

While disciplining her daughter, good at multi-tasking, the woman was able to give me advice
on which and how pies to order, and when to pick them up. She had used the service before.

The point is that technology does NOT have to destroy culture and connectedness, it can just as easily
enhance the effectiveness of society to become what it must.

As always, I could be wrong.
