The vast majority of "taste" is actually smell. One experiment which corroborates this statement is the pear and apple experiment, in which a blindfolded participant is given a slice of pear to eat whilst simultaneously and unknowingly smelling a slice of apple which is placed under the nose. The apple's fragrance, which is much stronger than the pear's, completely overwhelms the olfactory center, and in combination with the marked similarity of texture, sweetness, etc. between the two fruits, the participant thinks to be eating an apple slice, and not a pear slice as is actually the case.

I was with you until the very last 2 paragraphs. I think you got the part about Smith's not being conscious entirely backwards. His so called confusion of taste and smell is Synesthesia, a quality, I would say, is very indicative of the human condition (aka consciousness). humans get this all the time, ESPECIALLY in terms of smell crossing with taste. More importantly, you failed to discuss the most important part Agent Smith's quote “It’s the smell, if there is such a thing . . . I can taste your stink and every time I do, I fear that I’ve somehow been infected by it.” He FEARS he has been infected by it [the smell]. Fear is not any sort of data or function a non-conscious being should be able to process, especially when the fear is based on an irrational premise such as infection by smell. But Smith has been infected by it. When he says "it's the smell, if there is such a thing" he is trying to convince himself that he is still a machine, that smell is just a stream of data. But I think that scene shows the introduction to Smith's awakening and his CONSCIOUS battle with his emergence. The purpose of Agent Smith was to show an awakening within the machines as a contrast to Neo's awakening. You can begin to see very clear distinctions between Agent Smith and the other agents as the first movie progresses (much more so in 2 and 3, but I refuse to accept those movies' existence when talking about the original Matrix film). Smith shows dedication, fear, and anger which none of the other Agents ever exhibit. And Smith exhibits these human characteristics outside of the Morpheus interrogation, so I cannot accept the deception tactic without a much greater showing of evidence to support that he was somehow trying deceive anyone other than himself. (And of course we later see in 2 and 3 that Smith has completely separated from the programming of the Matrix and has become the anti-christ figure to contrast against Neo's Oneness. Blehk.) To sum it all up, I believe the Matrix shows very strong evidence that the machines are based on quantum computation and Agent Smith is the first of the machines to begin to develop conscious thought. (I would like to add a hypothesis that perhaps quantum computation is a new development for the Matrix. In the same interrogation scene with Morpheus, Smith reveals that there had been previous versions of the Matrix which had failed. Perhaps this newest version of the Matrix succeeded not only because it strictly adhered to the physical laws of the real world, but also because it began using quantum computation which was capable of conscious thought. There's really not enough to go off of to support that one way or another, but I thought it was interesting.)

Neonates have more synapses than adults, One quadrillion in babies compared to between one hundred and five hundred trillion in adults. The brain removes synapses it doesn't need anymore as it organizes itself.
