But of course, what does the potential for creating new, possibly intelligent, forms of life have to do with the Singularity?

As an afterthought, it may not be a bad idea to have the best premium beer engineered and ready (and thoroughly taste tested) as an offering to the first fully conscious AI when it finally emerges....you know, first impressions and all.......

Hooray! Make synthetic organism! Great news!

There is nothing to worry about; no precautions are necessary. I mean, what could possibly go wrong?!

One other point: this advance can't possibly have anything to do with the Singularity. That is all about computers and silicon. There is no connection.

Good thinking. Longevity = more time to develop better beer.

I subscribe to your idea but for a more interesting prospect than just beer taste, LONGEVITY.
The Methuselah foundation Mprize is (seemingly) stalling, and anyway, mus musculus normal lifespan is too much to QUICKLY assess effects of genetic changes. Not so with yeast which already has a lot in common with us humans at the biochemical level.
