If IBM can make this good enough a race will spark to make better and better synapse chips, and most personal computer things are going carry them in 5 years.

I've long thought Von Neumann's architecture could be very modified and played around with different components.

It would be no surprize to see ibm win he race to build human-machine intelligence which is really underway and will dictate which group dominates the future

Brain and Mind are different things. IBM is developing brain-chips not mind-chips; they may process information like a brain, but that doesn't mean that they will think like a human, it will need sophisticated apps to do that. A long way to go...

I agree, but lets not be naive. The research is funded by the military. One day these chips may be used in cell phones or desktops. But i think they will be used first in drones with missiles attached to it, Whether we like it or not.

My point is what "they" want, is simply too risky. Whoever "they" are is irrelevant. The point remains that we have a responsibility to make the most appropriate decision as a human race before it is too late. This is a serious issue which needs to become a global hot topic soon!

Where do they get their funding from? DARPA?...doesnt that say enough? They dont want a soldier with a chip in his brain, they want a robot with human like decision making capabilities.

Game Theory 101. What are the possible outcomes of technological singularity you ask?
i) Hostile computer takeover;
ii) Friendly computer takeover; and
iii) Humans merge with technology entirely so it's not a cliche of "it's humans vs machines" to begin with.

i) and ii) are simply too risky. That leaves us with iii).

We need to figure out a way to merge and integrate ourselves with technology before it may be too late.
