Iris (Siri for Android) released
October 24, 2011
Iris for Android, a Siri lookalike, is now available on the Android Market, Gizmodo reports.
Iris (Siri backwards), emulates what Siri on the iPhone 4S does: you tap a mic, you talk, and Siri responds to you. Siri could lead to a real AI, Wired blogger Jon Stokes says.
The same SRI International defense project that gave birth to Siri — CALO (Cognitive Assistant that Learns and Organizes) — now has a new web-based service, Trapit, which uses AI for Web search and online news, reports Xconomy.

Iris is a spoof, a joke, a pun on Siri. And it’s a good spoof.
But it’s not ‘Siri for Android’ in any meaningful way, shape or form.
If I create a stack of metal boxes this afternoon, and call it ‘Nostaw’, will Kurzweil give me some free publicity about ‘The New Watson’?

Iris is just a joke. It has no AI. It is just an Elisa that fakes a conversation. Why this is covered on Kurzweilai is my question.

That does really irk me actually.
It goes like this: Apple creates an impressive product/feature, Android copies it, in this case even to the point of not being original enough to think of a name.
Which obviously is not what has happened here or does, but that’s the impression it gives.
And if there total development time was 8 hours it either won’t be competitive at all, or it doesn’t bring anything new to Android’s repertoire.

This is the same type of logic fallacy that’s pervasive in today’s society when people compare Apple to “PC” (Personal Computer), or in this case Android. To put it simply, Apple developed Siri. “Android” didn’t develop Iris, a third-party developer, Dexetra, did.

You are confused as to who created Siri. Siri was an independent company spun out of SRI International to create apps based on SRI’s research. Siri released an app for the iPhone and was developing apps for Android and Blackberry.
Apple then purchased Siri (in April 2010) and killed the Android and Blackberry app development.
Apple didn’t innovate. Apple didn’t create Siri. Apple bought Siri then prevented any other platform from having it.

Wow. Awesome comment. All one ever hears is how amazing Apple is. Good to know they buy up companies and competition just like everyone else.

I told someone the other day:
Google creates Android and gives the whole world a platform anyone can use, any device can run, and that anyone can develop for.
Apple creates IoS, IPhone, Ipad and gives the world a high priced, locked down OS and apps certain never to work on anything else.
My response to Apple: “Nice Job…. ASSHOLES!”
For Android: “All my <3"

Siri backwards must really irk the Apple fanboys. Anyway this competition is fantastic.
