There is an article in the NYTimes about a new robot from iRobot. It's a rosy piece about how this new robot will take unwanted menial jobs, so we can retrain for better ones. The robot is autonomous. You bring it to a work station and with a easy interface, quickly train it to do the required task. As an example they used it in a plastics factory, on one of the moulding machines. Just watch how fast these robots take lower level jobs away.

The arm could also be inflated with a hydraulic fluid. Some have electro mechanical abilities to turn from liquid to a semi solid state. This would increase the load bearing capabilities.
