i get a feeling of foreboding and a sense of sterility, but that came from the characters and not the tech. Fire cooks our food but also burns down the village.

Love it. Having white-surfaced objects in the room , which the AR can locate and paint on, but which would fade into the white space unless painted, will be present in these future living spaces. An empty room still will feel empty at some level of awareness, and perhaps that is the metaphor for the characters emptiness of soul.
