The ability of human pattern matching to not only match patterns but to use closeness to previous patterns to extract meaning allows us to quickly know what "whiffling" probably means. For an AI to take a made up word and guess well at its likely meaning would be a huge milestone (maybe even marking completion) of the quest toward human-equivalent AI.
