As the inaugural Graduate Studies Program of 2009 (GSP-09) is ending, we will be ready to quickly progress into new projects, and new phases at the Singularity University. (I wish I could have written “ready to take a month or two off”, but no, that is not going to be the case!) In the previous months, we have released videos, that illustrated our goals. Matt Rutherford, our Media Producer and his dedicated team, recorded countless hours of lectures, workshops, events, team meetings, interviews, and more.

One of the questions that we have asked since the beginning was, since much of the experience of the Graduate Studies Program is very difficult if not impossible to replicate elsewhere, how can we maximize our global impact? The material we have is priceless, and we want it to reach as many people as possible! There are millions of people who would be interested in taking advantage of our materials, and have the means, broadband internet connection, etc. But there are many, whose level of English understanding is not high enough to follow an advanced lecture on nanotechnology, or robotics, or personalized medicine.… read more

6:00 am: Coffee… So pleasant. Piece and quiet. And the Music – my first inspiration.

Finally woke up to check and answer some emails from/to my colleagues from the German office. I am working there for Fraunhofer Institute. Here is the group. So nice to see them again. ;)

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.–Sitting in a classroom, listening to students explain their approach to an assignment to develop an initiative to impact the lives of a billion people over ten years, one could be forgiven for taking it all with a grain of salt.

After all, student projects like this are usually peppered with holes, naive assumptions, and unrealistic goals.… read more

2:14 am: Going to bed. Have been working late on Gettaround, the car sharing service that a team of Singularity University students are starting. We’ve been at iPhone developer camp all weekend making an iPhone app that allows people to share, locate, and start cars (plus some other neat features). I also snuck into Group A’s workshop on Artificial Intelligence yesterday, so I’ve been burning the candle at both ends.

On July 31st, a group of Singularity University students and I decided to attend iPhoneDevCamp at Yahoo HQ – for an impromptu field trip. Our goal: to gain first-hand experience of the rapid pace of innovation in Silicon Valley. And maybe build a cool app to enter into the hack-a-thon competition. The result was an app called “Gettaround” (www.gettaround.com).

20,000 lines of code, 2 days, and just 4 hrs of sleep later, our app won the “Best Money Making App” category (sponsored by Mobclix) in the hack-a-thon. Here is a short clip of our presentation for the judges:

Singularity University — the new academic institution with the goal of preparing the next generation of leaders to address “humanity’s grand challenges” — today named the 40 students participating in the inaugural Graduate Studies Program (GSP). Hailing from 13 countries, and from a cross-range of academic and business backgrounds, the students of Singularity University truly represent the next generation of leaders and innovators to address the major issues facing our world. And, throughout the summer program, students will share insights and daily experiences using social media channels, such as WordPress, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Picasa.

The summer class is composed of 26 men and 14 women, ranging in age from 22 to 47 years old. The 13 nations represented are: USA, Canada, Israel, United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, India, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Turkey, Czech Republic, and Russia.

Singularity University is modeled after the successful International Space University, founded at MIT in 1987, which has become one of the leading interdisciplinary, international and intercultural institutions for the study of space. The GSP is a nine-week graduate-level interdisciplinary curriculum designed to facilitate understanding, collaboration, and innovation across a broad range of carefully chosen scientific and technological disciplines whose developments are exponentially accelerating. Singularity University.

It started with passionate people and a daring idea. 10^9+.

SU co-founder & Vice-Chancellor Peter Diamandis has a brain-wave…

Then came the structure – Singularity University. They built it, and we came. 40 of the world’s emerging leaders, students and innovators from 14 countries and countless disciplines…given 9 weeks to create and perpetuate ideas to positively impact 1 billion people. Nothing intimidating about that, right?… read more
