While experiencing long term sleep disruption &
deprivation which involved going 6-8 months w/o
any sleep (and unofficionally breaking world records)
which involved being zapped by frequencies that kept my brain and
body going I have recently been "allowed" to sleep during
the day. I has gained the weight for sure.-)

Re cultures that have adapted: "Iceland, however, seems to be an exception. A study of more than 2000 people there found the prevalence of seasonal affective disorder and seasonal changes in anxiety and depression to be unexpectedly low in both sexes.[46] The study's authors suggested that propensity for SAD may differ due to some genetic factor within the Icelandic population." -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seasonal_affective_disorder

Yes, I agree that if your moving into these new extremes, the effects are particularly extreme. I'm curious about the artic circle cultures that have adapted. They may even have cultural stories in relation to these effects. Knowing how adaptable we are, over the generations there might be some interesting changes. For thousands of years they have had no clear daily clue to set the cycles. I've heard some stories from more indigenous people of these latitudes, that they enjoyed the long days. I haven't heard any stories in relation to the dark. I would imagine the dark is particularly hard on circadian rhythms, since they are cued by light.

Actually, this study shows that moving from lower to higher latitudes tends to increase obesity, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is higher in Nordic countries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seasonal_affective_disorder).

We should examine the effects. To look for benefits would be biased research. Cultures that have adapted to those extremes of light and dark should have significant alterations to there circadian cycles. The research could give us clues as to how we can adapt to the time shifts of the modern world.

So we should look for the clearly benefitial genetic variations of people from the north

That's a good question. Could people be happier and thinner in the land of the midnight sun?

It would be interesting to see studies of people who live in constant sunlight or darkness, for different times of the year. I know there is a correlation between darkness and depression. Some people are very affected by the short days of winter.

I know it is harmeful to my memory. But my bfp is rather good.

But the loss of of daily rythms certainly does not cause obesity alone, it may be a contributing factor.
