We all want to be happy. At some point, all that will be required is the cost of a medical procedure. It makes me wonder where the motivation will be to advance the human condition. I just hope AGI will be advanced enough to take over by then.

If advanced medical technology sometime in the future will be able to fix virtually every problem (heart attack, cancer, etc) within the human body, many people would still die before they could get to medical attention, because often once one notices it, it's too late. That is, without something like this that can monitor the body.

Amazing foundational work that may help evolve our definition of humanity to embrace a broader continuum and challenge the present carbon-based hegemony of consciousness

I just had another thought. When North Korea gets this, they will rewire everybody's brains and have an entire population of willing slaves.

If you can grow a new hippocampus, you can grow empathy for a sociopath. About a quarter of the prison population are sociopaths, yet if they aren't in for violent crimes, they still get paroled. One day it just might be required for them to get a conscience before they are released. Of course, the ACLU will howl that this is a violation of constitutional rights. But setting a sociopath loose is a clear and present danger to society.

This technology sounds like a great way to remotely monitor the performance of any biological nueral prosthetic after it's implanted. I can envision growing a new a hippocampus within this technology and then being able to read out and record all memories that flow through the implanted cells.

I think it could also work in reverse and be used to cntrol the I/O and other functions of the prosthetic.

Let your imagination run wild...

I'm surprised that no transhumanists have commented on this article. This clearly opens the door for electronics to merge with biology. Small implantable electronics could be coaxed to integrate. Obviously, as with most articles at this web site, there is much more work to be done, but it sets the stage for research and development!
