Most realistic android infant?
July 29, 2012
Osaka University’s Asada Lab roboticists say Affetto is the most realistic infant robot ever made, thanks to the 12 degrees of freedom of its head, its smile, and the 20 flexible pneumatic actuators to move its arms, neck, and spine.
What do you think? Does this bypass the uncanny valley yet? (Warning: fast-forward to :58 to bypass the scary part.)
They plan to add voice, body temperature, skin, body movements, and smell.

Is there something wrong with me if I dont find anything scary about the first 58s??
by Roland
Nothing uncanny here. It’s obviously as much a machine as the robots in the factory I worked in earlier this year.

Technology helps advance divergent fields. This will help cars, farming, construction, manufacturing, and a host of others.

No messy diapers, the ability to turn it off at night, probably will learn a lot faster than humans so won’t have to keep telling it no a million times, and to top it off, no stretched out butts, boobs or bellies. Perfect baby! Real humans are so last century lol.

Have you folks seen “Artificial Intelligence? What use could a robot infant be? i do hope they never give it the intelligence that the little boy robot had in AI. BTW the robot’s human face looks scarier than the metallic one.

I, for one, welcome our robot overlord toddlers.
Just build them cute enough and the world is theirs!

Maybe a prepubescent Arnold Schwarzenager face would help!

I think it’s still got a long way to go before it gets out of the uncanny valley.

‘If I see one comment about the uncanny fu—damn it!’

Hey the article specifically asks “What do you think? Does this bypass the uncanny valley yet?”, i’m just answering… although i’m clueless about whether or not it was a rhetorical question.

Not rhetorical

It doesn’t matter how it looks if there’s no brain in there.

I’m sorry, I’m a bad little boy(who said, wasn’t me!).

Why look at that it’s Chucky!!! When does it’s fangs come out, or it rips your head of with robotic power!!!!! Actually they are getting better. They just need some tips from Hollywood effects artists. Remember this is the Japanese, whose corporations will take over the world. Well maybe I should press the edit button on that one.

I should block that one but I’m laughing too much :)

..I hope your not serious about blocking comments…

That’s just what I was thinking. The robot needs a Chucky face. Something we’ve seen before.
