Hopefully NASA just making small talk to keep people interested, and hopefully preparing people for more interesting observations.

I don't know enough about the topography around this " stream" but I think it probably is more like a wadi. Precipitation probably fell in the highlands as snow. This may have accumulated to a great depth. Periodically those snow packs may have melted, causing a flash stream to occur.

The low gravity is the primary responsible of water loss (as for the atmosphere). It is not only evaporation but also sublimation which make their toll and quite early in the history of the planet. Presence of water on Mars is indeed old news (more that 30 years old actually) and already extensively discussed e.g. here http://www.uapress.arizona.edu/onlinebks/ResourcesNearEarthSpace/resources26.pdf

Yes, gypsum deposits have already been found on Mars. They would be indicators of water .. but not particularly of life forms. But they would make good fertilizers for hydroponic farming .. on Mars ...

Yeah, there is water on Mars. We got the message.
How many times will they repeat these news over and over?
We have been knowing that there is water on Mars for decades now.
What huge discovery is Curiosity going to make next? That the Mars surface is red?
