The Kurzweil Foundation and Kurzweil Educational Systems, Inc. presented scholarships to 30 winners selected by the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) at the NFB's recent 2003 annual convention (NFB) in Louisville. The scholarships included $1,000 and a Kurzweil 1000 Reading System.
NFB founder Dr. Kenneth Jernigan realized that "the pace of technology was accelerating, and that these hastening advances would either be liberating for blind people, or would represent another barrier," said Ray Kurzweil in a speech, "The Power of an Idea."
Jernigan's solution was the NFB's Research and Training Institute, now under construction in Baltimore -- "an example of the power of an idea."
