News Search Tips
Our search algorithms work like Google, with a few exceptions.
Basic Search
To see a list of relevant news items, type the words you're looking for and click on the Search button. For multiple words, the search algorithm automatically combines "AND" and "OR" searching to ensure that the greatest number of relevant matches are included in search results. News items that match all search words ("AND" search) appear at the top of the list. News items that match one or more search words ("OR" search) are displayed below them. Using "AND" or "OR" between words has no effect.
For example, to search for all news items that mention "robotics" and/or "nanotechnology":

Both the headline and news item body are searched, along with keywords, if any.
Phrase Searches
To search for an exact phrase (or any character string), place quote marks around it. For example, to search for "Army plans to use nanotech":

Stemming
You can enter word stems (beginning characters in a word) to broaden your search. For example, searching for "robot" will return all news items with the words "robot," "robots," "robotic," "robotics," etc. Searching for "com gr" will return all news items containing "computing" or "growth" as well as "computer" or "graphics," etc.
Capitalization
Searches are not case-sensitive. All letters will be understood as lower case.
Keywords
We've added searchable keywords (such as "nanotechnology") to enrich searching for news items where the news item text or headline doesn't include them. They are displayed at the bottom of the news item (when viewing a single news item).
