Could we download it? Each video loads extremely slowly, really annoying. Some soft to make it happen?

were this supposed GOD character to actually exist, you know infinte intelligence and all that, it seems to me such a mind fits all the definitions of a highly developed machine intelligence… at least if you add in the divine, but oddly mental pathologies known as anger, jealousy, rage, and sadism. God, according to The Word, is a psychopath and should be locked up in an insane asylum. God is not needed for spirituality, and if that’s what u really need to be a good person; well, there’s always Zen.

Oh and John? What point of the technological singularity do you shun? Obviously using a computer is ok for you? Hopefully Jesus doesn’t find out you did that! Oops! What about motor cars and soap? The devils tools!!!
by Alex Moss
John how did you even find this site? The only person preaching here is you. P.S. Dinosaurs are real and gays should be allowed to marry.

Great topics, excellent!
I just wish I had the time to see them..

Hate to disappoint you folks but here is where you heard it first, THERE WILL BE NO SINGULARITY. Ray’s a nice guy but unfortunately he’s wrong.
His theory depends on a huge assumption which is wrong which is that a lower level of intelligence (namely us) can create a higher level one. Common sense should tell most right away that’s impossible. As they say you can’t get something from nothing.
Also his second false assumption is that God does not exist so he should state his ATHEISM clearly but has not to my knowledge done so. Of course God does exist and JESUS and will not permit such an occurence as the singularity. God is already the singularity if you like to put it that way.
Therefore if you believe in the singularity you have been duped and should also be an ATHEIST and lack COMMON SENSE. I do hope they don’t remove this comment because serious criticisms are needed for Ray’s theorem. A balance should be restored in this forum. Trouble is it is a new topic and not many critics have woken up yet.
So please bear with me and suffer this somewhat harsh critical attempt. I have a lot more to say but will wait to see if you leave this comment up.

John: “god” and religion are off-topic on this site.

The idea that humans can’t create something more intelligent than themselves is not “common sense.” We’ve already created chess programs that can beat the world’s best grandmasters – and in maybe a decade that technology went from Deep Blue to a program that can run on a cheap laptop. And that’s just one example off the top of my head.
Even if we weren’t able to create something more intelligent than humans, a computer simulation of a human brain – which we already have the technology to do – would “think” thousands of times faster than humans. The singularity does not hinge on humans directly creating a super-intelligence.

Right. It is recommended that visitors to this site become familiar with some of the primary references on the Singularity, such as Vernor Vinge’s essay on the technological Singularity and Ray Kurzweil’s The Singularity Is Near, prior to posting their speculations on the topic.

Do note that this is a community that allows criticism and intelligent debate. Comments are only rarely taken down; only if they’re directly insulting and not contributing in any way.
Most of us honestly believe in the singularity. There is no reason to silence you, since we can refute you with facts and argue our point.
I don’t try to convince my friends and family about the singularity. I’ve told them about it, and that’s that. The future will prove it right, since developments are progressing as expected for the singularity (if not faster than expected).
That being said, I get the idea you’re personally uncomfortable with the idea of the singularity. And that’s fine, it’s a big event to take place, and not all of it will be icecream and gummybears. But perhaps you’d be better of discussing the particulars that you’re uncomfortable with than disregarding the concept altogether, because it’s coming, regardless of how we feel.

@Jon: Those Christians always claim to be surpressed, when in fact they are doing the surpressing, e.g through peer pressure and the kind of propaganda we can see Mr.Middlemas (funny name btw, to me of course) employ (stigmatizing others as lacking commonsense, jut because they don’t follow his creed).
Maybe he beliefs that common sense stuff, but that would mean he is a really superficial person.
If someone is uncomfortable with an upcoming event/ possibility and he therefore -choosing more or less consciously to disregard the truth- starts to “rationalize” just in order to feel better, he -imho- lacks maturity and would be far better off working on this particular (maturity) problem. If he doesn’t do that and said event occours, it will feel (to him) all the “nastier” for it^^

To be far with John, we do discuss god and religion. We don’t preach. The article on the Templeton Foundations support for proving or disproving psychic phenomenon is born from Sir Johns interest in scientifically addressing the issues of metaphysical beliefs and phenomenon. Ray has stated that he is not convinced that there is a god, but he has studied different religions. This web site is based on scientific or provable facts. Many who post here have religiosity views,. This website is not about forcing others to follow a particular belief system. John I would incourage you to read more about the issues presented in this website. These are trends in science that are affecting us directly. Don’t be bullied by the sarcastic comments in relation to your beliefs. I myself don’t agree with what you say, but the ridicule that you have received is clearly a personal attack. In general those are the only comments that get deleted. I don’t know why those are being allowed to stand. Many people have posted a disbelief in Rays ideas. I hope that you return to this website and continue to post. You can state your opinions as long as they aren’t based on religious beliefs, without any verification. You may believe in the truth of the bible, but there isn’t any scientific proofs of it’s validity. Preaching that we have to believe in it will just be received with ridicule. I myself have written about the inconsistencies of the Judeo, Christian, muslim. Belief systems. In the long run I can’t find any religion that isn’t filled with contradictions. I strongly believe in god and have stated so many times. People come to this site for facts not beliefs. Opinions are acceptable, not preaching that anyone has to believe as you do. Everyone here has heard about Jesus. I haven’t heard anything in the bible that says there can’t be a singularity. I don’t think you understand the word as it is being defined here. Whether you believe in it or not, the rapid changes that technology is creating is real. Reading on this website will give you a better understanding of what is actually happening. I wish you well. I hope you aren’t too offended by the personal attacks.

Ohh.. everything is a personal attack to you, right Bri?
I can see the delete button working on this post already =P

“His theory depends on a huge assumption which is wrong which is that a lower level of intelligence (namely us) can create a higher level one. Common sense should tell most right away that’s impossible. As they say you can’t get something from nothing.”
Well, maybe you should take a beginners course in logics.Btw: There is no such thing as common sense .
First: A lower level of intelligence is more than nothing, so your claim isn’t logically entailed in your premise. The next thing: Whenever you learn, or when you grew up, a lower intelligence created a higher one.
Second:Your religious axioms are just that, just some claims. The existence of a Christian god claim neither for example neither has good evidence on its side nor is necessary to explain things.
Third: Just ask yourself one honest question: If I were born at another time and another place, would I still have the exact same religion?
If no, you see what this says about the feelings related to religious topics. You never questioned what mommy and daddy told you, and now you are conditioned to rationalize your beliefs whenever your feelings order you to do so.You’re the servant of your feelings instead of their master.
Maybe you would wan’t to finally grow up and re-examine your religion honestly, viewing it from a neutral standpoint, asking yourself whenever your conditioned standard “arguments” (morals, necessaty to explain things etc) come up where their source lies (who thaught you, who-like a good salesperson- countered common objections beforehand), and you should try to “disprove” them e.g by counter examples.
Fourth:Balance in itself is no value concerning the pursuit of truth, should I go on and start preaching satanist teachings to increase balance of represantion of beliefs on this site?
Have a nice day:)
Ps: Greet god for me, when you meet her.
Pps:You didn’t critizise, you just claimed and insulted. You won’t convert anyone by this ad-hominem attacks and by moralizing, this site isn’t read by the kind of people this stuff works on (google mind-projection fallacy, groups can fall prey to this too).

@Mr.X
I like the 4th point. I vote Yes.

I don’t wanna meet God, Mr. X. She’s black and she’s pissed (have you seen a sculpture of Kali dancing on her throne of dead men’s skulls?)

Great videos, I have seen most of them now.
I just have one personal request for the next summit, personally I would like to see the return of Douglas R. Hofstadter, to see if his views or critique has changed in anyway since his stanforf singularity summit.
