You can’t militarize space. This one rule has led to decades of peaceful development of space programs worldwide. The discovery of a strange artifact by Dr. Alayna Wong precipitates a crisis; what appears to be an undiscovered comet is soon revealed to be an alien structure on a cometary trajectory toward the sun. There is a race between countries to see who can study and control the artifact dubbed the “Solar Express.”

As the alien craft gets closer, it begins to alter the surface of the sun in strange new ways, ways that could lead Alayna to revolutionary discoveries, provided Alayna’s friend, Captain Christopher Tavoian can prevent war from breaking out as he navigates among the escalating tensions between nations.

New York Times bestselling Science Fiction author L. E. Modesitt, Jr. believes that robust exploration of space and our solar system is imperative. Because of the enormous popularity of Science Fiction (many of those who work in the fields of science and technology credit science fiction as an important inspiration for their career choice) and the growing need for educational programs for the public, Tor/Forge Books and NASA created NASA-Inspired Works of Fiction (NIWoF), a series of books centered around the concepts pertinent to the current and future work of NASA.

Tor/Forge Books is thrilled to present the second NIWoF, Solar Express, a thrilling, new hard science fiction novel by Modesitt, who has previously authored the standalone science fiction novel The One-Eyed Man in addition to over 60 other works of science fiction and fantasy. He has a true talent for weaving real-life science into compelling adventures and understands the technology needed to turn dreams into reality.
