Familiar to most as the Unabomber, Theodore Kaczynksi was spared his life by means of a plea bargain and given four life sentences plus 30 years in prison. Kaczynski eluded the F.B.I. for 17 years, during which time he orchestrated 16 explosions that killed three people and injured 23 others. A brilliant mathematician, Kaczynski relinquished his academic career to live in solitude, write tracts against the proliferation of technology (and its proponents), and commit acts of terrorism against those whom he believed were at the forefront of scientific, technological and cultural developments that ultimately would lead to the end of human freedom.
