The Singularity Is Near movie available today

Is the Singularity near?
“Well, some amazing changes that are fantastically big and fantastically fast are coming our way,” says noted futurist Alvin Toffler in the much-anticipated movie, The Singularity Is Near, A True Story About the Future, available today.
The Singularity is Near stars Ramona, played by NCIS star Pauley Perrette, a superintelligent avatar (artificial-intelligence- based, human-like virtual person) created by AI wizard Ray Kurzweil (played by himself). Ramona desperately wants to be accepted legally as a human, but faces immediate shutdown by the authorities.
So she turns to (who else?) famous civil liberties lawyer Alan Dershowitz (played by himself) and seeks coaching by Tony Robbins (also played by himself) to discover what it means to be human.
These dramatic scenes punctuate an investigation of our amazing future by Kurzweil in dialogue with 19 “big thinkers,” who explore the impacts of the rapidly accelerating amazing technologies ahead, enriched with animations and graphics.
The movie is available exclusively through store.singularity.com via downloading, DVD, or deluxe box set (including the feature film and more than three hours of bonus material, behind-the-scenes footage, and extended interviews).
Director: Anthony Waller (Mute Witness, An American Werewolf In Paris, The Guilty)
Producers: Ray Kurzweil, Ehren Koepf, and Toshi Hoo
Executive Producer: Martine Rothblatt
A Terasem Motion Infoculture presentation in association with KurzweilAI.net, based on Ray Kurzweil’s New York Times best-selling book The Singularity Is Near.

I just saw the movie and I have to say….I enjoyed it!! Kurzweil’s stuff seems to go well, if not better, when obviously examined alongside his other related stuff….for those who, if they choose, to ONLY see his movies — obviously, it pays to see both Transcendent Man and this one side-by-side, to get the best possible idea concerning the vision.
What I enjoyed about this movie, was seeing other people interviewed that didn’t make it into the previous movie, like Bill Joy, Martine Rothblatt, Aubrey de Grey, and really just a host of people that honestly should have been there in the first place, especially since they play such key roles in all the things Kurzweil talks about.
As for the “plot”….I honestly enjoyed it — perhaps this is from the eyes of someone who has intensively read his works before watching the movies, but I liked it…..is that EXACTLY how the future will untold? We’ll see….It’s easy to get turned off by the B-movie plotline, which plays like something you’d typically see on Sci-Fi channel, but the plotline itself was never really the main point I feel….the plotline with Ramona made me think of the Molly and George bits at the end of each chapter in his books – they do a good job of summerizing and creating an “in-a-nutshell” image, but there is much more to it then that. My point is, I wasn’t placing too much into it because I felt it wasn’t really “the point” so much as just an expression of how the Singularity can be viewed as…it’s the whole picture, interviews (more so actually) and all that really make up the vision of the future through the eyes of Ray Kurzweil. That said, I still enjoyed it, and especially enjoyed Tony Robbins presence, who in general, is pleasant to watch.
Critiques? Well….I wasn’t too bothered by the after-effects, because again, that wasn’t the main thing — the production values obviously weren’t very high, and I feel that’s why people can be superficially turned off…it’s like the B-movie plotline — for those who take it too deeply and seriously, they will laugh because of how cheesy they may feel it is…however, that’s superficial, because again, it’s not the set-design or anything that really matters but the genuinely plausible ideas and everything that sets this movie up. That said, I still wish there were better production values in this movie if possible, because, it seemed almost like something from the 1990′s in how almost flashy it was….of course, one looking for something more visually mature, can look at Transcendent Man.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie and feel, if you are only ‘ever’ going to watch the movies, you definitely need to see both side-by-side to get the best possible picture of Kurzweil’s vision….of course, reading the books and everything else will make it more so.

Too bad there aren’t Conversations with people representing popular culture – art, music, spirituality, etc. I know Kurzweil is a left brain dude, but I hope there’s more to life then that!
by Bri
Ray plays piano beautifully. I think he’s got that hemisphere covered too.

This left-right brain stuff is an outdated myth.

Very left-brained comment!

All the more reason for him to have interviewed a musician/artist. Comments in this section aren’t about him, but about the film.

I enjoyed the movie until Tinker Bell started flying around. Probably could’ve used a good screenplay writer.

Unlike others, I ordered and received exactly what I wanted on time (the deluxe edition). I had to weigh my slight disappointment with the movie with the realization that the movie was not made for Singulatarians who know all the ins and outs, the time lines and the arguments for and against. It was made for the masses who would say, “WTF” if asked what the Singularity was.
The second disc was fantastic – how the film was made (interesting to me) and the interviews. I only wish there could have been more since these were the “meat” of the movie. Still, good attempt at explaining a complex iissue.
by TSlade
I have been looking forward to the film for a long time. I list it on my giant list of documentary films here: http://www.ionet.net/~tslade/docufilm.htm
I ordered it right away as soon as the website said it could be ordered. I received a msg saying the discs were all backordered. But the DVD showed up a few days later, this Tuesday 09/04/12. I was very excited to get it and watched it that night. Incredible film, as expected. I will watch it again tomorrow night. I agree with another comment here that the presence of Tony Robbins was not a good sign. And I’m sure there is lots we could criticize about the film, but I try to get whatever there is to get from a film, and there is plenty to think about here. I thought the whole
drama/docu thing with the actress/AI was well-done. Very interesting film for sure. One of the most mind-blowing films I have seen.
But I do have a major disappointment, which is what brought me here. I am sure that I will be even more interested in the extended interviews on the extra disc. That is why I paid extra to order the Deluxe 2-disc edition. When I excitedly opened the package, I found that it contained the single-disc edition. So I emailed the support address right away. I got a response right back from a “robot” saying we got your message and will respond within 48 hours, although we try to respond sooner. It is now 2 days later and I have received no response. So I started looking around to see if I could find a phone number. Nothing on the film’s website. So I looked at the box and looked up the address – although is says Kurzweil Technologies, it is actually Acutrack, a company that makes and sends out DVDs. I called them and they were a bit puzzled at why I was calling them, since they don’t do customer service. But she said she would research it get back to me. That was a couple of hours ago and I need to go to work soon. So I am hoping that someone can look into this. Why is there no response at support@singularity.com ??? I really want to get the 2-disc set that I paid for. Please tell me how we can proceed to fix this.
thanks,
Terry Slade
by TSlade
OK – 3hours later, I have received an email from support@singularity.com saying that their vendor shipped me the wrong product and the 2-disc set is on the way. So my issue is solved and I am happy. Looking forward to getting the extended interviews. The email msg was a bit impersonal, not mentioning my name or order number, so I am assuming that this was some kind of mixup that may have affected lots of orders. But its fixed!
thanks, Terry Slade

Haven’t received the movie dvd yet, but watched most of the downloadable interviews.
Ray – Thank you.

how about french subtitle ? (and other language subtitle as well of course)
by eric
Big fan of Ray and his ideas, but I thought the movie was off. The bits with Ramona were cringe-worthy, at best. The whole thing came off as very amateurish, the timeline wasn’t consistent, there was no sense of continuity. The singularity will remain on the fringe of the mainstream if this is the best marketing job Ray can muster!
by Looking Glass
You’re entitled to your opinion but you must wait for that level of production value until Hollywood picks this up.
by Kathy
I’ll purchase it when it is available on Amazon Video instant download. Until then I’ll read the book.
by gabriel2133
I am a big fan of kurweil’s work. The movie was ok. I enjoyed the intrviews that come with the bonus pack.
by RBT
agreed 100%. buy the movie and support it, it’s got some great stuff, but for me the best part was all the interviews in the bonus pack.
by GatorALLin
…yeah, I enjoyed the interviews and bonus material more than the movie, but I think you still need to watch the movie first to understand Ray’s points during the discussions… As a long time fan of Ray’s I had secretly grown really board of all of Ray’s interviews as they started to sound like a broken record (at least for me and after hearing them so many times and same basic message). It was nice to watch Ray during the interviews hold back from going on his own rants or point making…(yea! I was honestly proud of him). I noticed him trying hard to hold back a few times… almost giving in to that self indulgent temptation to always play the teacher… anyhow… I enjoyed the interviews and style of having Ray lead his basic push of his own ideas through these other experts. I was hoping to see some details about how Ray himself is preparing for surviving until the singularity by looking at his vitamin and heath related efforts to live forever (take us along for what he thinks is working or has the best chance….so we can try it also). For me there were a few extra cheesy moments with some of the interviews as you could see their posed set of awards in the background ($20 worth of clear acrylic plaques, etc) with Aubrey Gray and had the feeling he had just dyed his beard to look young…ray also with some hair dye going on… and some of Aubrey Gray’s (btw, who I like and much appreciate!) assumptions already blown out of the water by a ted video just posted http://www.ted.com/talks/mina_bissell_experiments_that_point_to_a_new_understanding_of_cancer.html so we have a long way to go and our A=B and B=C, thus A=C line of reasoning is often Epic Fail when there are dozens of these holding up a theory and an earlier one breaks down. Regardless, I enjoyed the movie and bonus interviews and hope some of these great ideas leak out and spread. I do agree with some posts here that the irony of making this movie easier to download and use would have been nice to fix and you would think Ray must have dozens of web geniuses that would work for free just to put him on the resume. Proof there is still a lot of work left to do….
by Unsatisfied
Your system should be automated for download if you are going to make us pay for it. If I bought a digital movie any other place, I would be able to begin downloading immediately, not have to wait 24 hours just to get the download link. What an utter disgrace from a website that claims the singularity is practically on our doorstep….
by ScienceSoma
Unfortunately, I must agree. I paid expecting to start downloading (which will take a bit in itself), and instead I may be able to watch it by this time tomorrow. It is a poor model. That said, I do appreciate Ray’s work and still look forward to the film with anticipation.
by Nitish
why can’t we just stream like youtube rental or itunes, faster, better distribution anyways.

The download is extremely slow. I’ll let it run for a few hours, and try again later tonight if it doesn’t complete, then try support if that doesn’t work.

Yes, the download will take some time. Due to the size of the file, a high speed broadband connection is strongly suggested. Please email support@singularity.com if you need assistance.

Any chance you will put this on Amazon or Google Video? I want both discs, just don’t want to have to store 3.5 gb offliine if I don’t need to. Looking forward to watching it!

this was a total disappointment
by Pete Johnston
Excellent! I loved it. I was somewhat guarded in my expectations, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Some of the graphics are a bit rough, but the movie was quite entertaining and it got the message across. This is a very good movie to show family and friends to introduce the concepts of the Technological Singularity and Transhumanism. I will be watching this again soon.
by bmcginnis007
I would like to see all these wonderful future technologies become reality but when there is difficulty downloading a movie online it makes me that much more skeptical.

Unless it’s Paypal, i can’t buy :( Please, make Paypal available.
And yes, if torrent appears faster than Paypal, then sorry guys. It’s not about money, it’s about time.
by Scott
Am eagerly awaiting free time to watch the movie. However, I must say that I am sorely disappointed with the comments that hint at (or outright advocate) pirating this movie. I expect a better “class” of individual that peruses this site, that might in turn, understand the precious nature of intellectual property. (Hint: it delves all the way to the definition of individuality/identity)
by Adam
Scott, it really sucks if Ray and his crew miss out on money from people pirating The Singularity is Near. However, I think a lot of people who pirate shows like this one are highly likely to go on to pay for more content, especially if it is easier and faster than piracy alternatives. The digital distribution system that is delivering the show has issues (a lot of comments about it here) which encourages a P2P mirror. All that aside, I am really proud that Ray and his team published this sans DRM, and I can’t wait to spend another $15 on his next volume. Maybe next time it will be streamed directly to our visual cortex!
Shouldn’t all intellectual property be accessible to everyone instantly? Won’t that be a milestone of the singularity?

Dear Admin, I ordered yesterday and can’t through at all.
by Admin
Gordon, please email support@singularity.com and reference your order number.
by Allan
? No download link and it’s been over two and a half hours!
Anyone else having this problem.
I think the Singularity is blocked by two things
1: Our reliance on Oil and Gas a primary energy sources.
2: Our disregard for the impact we are having on the planet.
Until we can resolve these two intertwined problems any singularity will be limited to the tiny fraction of a percent of humanity who can afford the technology to survive in a post carbon overheated desolate future earth.
by Admin
Allen, Sorry for the inconvenience. Please email support@singularity.com and reference your order number.
by Mike D
Allan,
The Singularity will not be “blocked” by the items you listed. Ray Kurzweil showed evidence in his book TSIN that neither war nor recession nor depression had any significant impact on exponentially accelerating technological change. The fruits of such exponential change WILL NOT be limited to “a tiny fraction of a percent of humanity.” Sounds like you’ve swallowed the politically correct global warming dogma hook, line, and sinker.
by Alex Moss
I think this was excellent. In my job I work as a video producer and editor and the people who are complaining about the quality of this are missing the point. This isn’t supposed to be The Avengers, this is supposed to give excellent content and get people thinking. This is a great v1.0 feature length doco. (transcendent man is a different angle).
I’m glad I saw it and the people I watched it with became excited and asked questions they hadn’t before. Successful.
Those who disrespect the purchase by suggesting torrent downloads or the creative style need to rethink what their contribution is to the education of exponential tech.
If this has inspired you to tell the story in a different way and you have the means and budget I’m sure it will be welcomed. Until then I’m very happy with the content. It’s so exciting.

Anyone who endorses Tony Robins loses some credibility in my view. Why a brilliant inventor such as Ray Kurzweil would have any association with this sadist fraud is a total mystery? http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/23/us/nearly-two-dozen-injured-at-tony-robbins-seminar.html

Yeah, and Alvin Toffler was embarassingly wrong about most of his predictions in “Future Shock.” And Alan Dershowitz is, well, a lawyer. Need I say more?
P.S. I’m not a big fan of Colin Powell, who was featured in Transcendent Man either, but I bought it anyway.

by JonathanH13
Ray needs to adjust his reality map: this type of future is a long way off (sadly). Exponentially accumulating information is NOT the same as exponentially accumulating knowledge and understanding. And let’s not make the the all-too-common mistake of misinterpreting a logistic increase (which plateaus off) for an exponential increase. Do not underestimate human greed, complacency and the desire to breed like rabbits (because this is what will derail the singularity).
by Chris
If the “desire to breed like rabbits” were going to derail the singularity, then wouldn’t population growth be on a higher order than technological growth? It’s not; population growth has been *slower* than exponential since 1970.
by Erik
Great that you provide digital download and to a reasonable price!
Just ordered a copy.
Waiting weeks for the DVD to arrive in europe and then go down to the basement to fetch my my old DVD-player and plug it in is just not an option. I would have downloaded the bits illegally Now I can download it hassle free direct into my iPad and watch it tonite, and at the same time give back to the people who created the movie. Great! Wish more companies would do the same.
by Dan
Put it on streaming Netflix or Amazon. Else no thanks. The Singularity is an illusion, Hilbert Space be damned.
by star0
The Singularity store is disappointing. It doesn’t accept Paypal, as far as I can see (and I don’t mean the PayPal credit card); and it doesn’t use https for security. I guess I’ll just have to sit this one out…
by Admin
Star0-As soon as you proceed to checkout the site switches to https:. We are looking into the PayPal processing issue.
by star0
Ah!, I know what the https issue was about now: I had used my iPad, and forgot that it displays a lock icon instead of the “https” prefix. (pretty foolish of me, actually.)
Still, I’m looking forward to seeing PayPal as a payment option.

The trailer looks absolutely fantastic. I’m very much looking forward to this movie. Like others, I’ve also waited a very long time for the public to finally get a glimpse of our Future. Thank you, Ray and cast and crew !
by Valdis Kibens
My grandfather used to say, “Prediction is very difficult, especially with respect to the future!”
The world is driving into the future with its eyes firmly glued to the rear view mirror.
Nonetheless, I will venture a personal prediction, namely, that the reaction to Kurzweil’s movie on predicting the future will be governed quite accurately by the three laws of prediction formulated by the British writer and scientist Arthur C Clarke. They are:
1. When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
2. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
3. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
Congratulations to Ray Kurzweil and his team for showing us what the view is out the front windshield of our vehicle as we drive, with considerable trepidation, into the future.

If it is a reasonable price, I will purchase it!

Ray Kurzweil’s vision provides an unerring roadmap to a sane future.
by Carl Borrowman
*facepalm*…
I’ve only seen the trailer and I already know this could have been so much more with a lot less cheese. I feel like I just lost a couple of IQ points by merely watching the trailer. The problem with intelligent people trying to make this stuff for the masses is that they often target the lowest common denominator, then wind up with a product worthy of ridicule by everyone. People already have fairy tales and religious myths; science, especially future science, deserves more than B movie production which would make it seem even more ridiculous than those myths. This reminds me of the disaster that was Technocalypse Part 1: Transhuman… that scene with the centaur, angel, and hospital patient made me laugh out loud it was so ridiculous and embarrassing. I know this stuff is real, and or can be made real soon, I just wish there was a little bit more gravitas in these productions… Transcendent Man (TM) is an excellent example of doing it right. The Singularity is Near (SIN) and it’s low production value seems that it will continue to encourage those like the one commentator who described Ray in TM as “a highly sophisticated crackpot (with)… pseudo-religious predictions” instead of influencing them to give leaders like Ray the credit and support they deserve now, which is a lot, and to realize this tech is real, serious, and making advancements exponentially. I’m glad there is still work being done to promote the message, it just saddens me that “SIN” wasn’t on a higher level, a “transcendent” level so to speak… but I suppose in that aspect it lives up to it’s acronym’s archaic meaning: misaligned action. I would like to congratulate the people behind this film on bringing so many amazing people together though, which almost makes up for the ridiculous vignettes.
by GatorALLin
…………….reply to Carl Borrowman…. Very well said….
by Carl Borrowman
Thank you. I just have tremendous respect for Ray Kurzweil, Aubrey De Grey, Tony Robbins, etc… I know they probably don’t care that much, but I just feel like they could have been the centerpiece of a top notch film/documentary, and that this may fall short in the “dramatic scenes” especially. Regardless, I’m still enthusiastic about seeing this for the interviews… though I think I may have a better clue as to why Peter Diamandis isn’t on the list now.
by GatorALLin
… i liked the bonus materials and interviews more than the movie … some real cheese for me at the Aubrey Gray interview… but I am still glad he is pushing hard for the end of aging.
by Bri
Although I agree with your points in principal, I think you are expecting to much. Artistically speaking it has lots of room to grow. I just don’t think the producers had any intention of making it that refined. The vignettes are just a simple vehicle to lay the story on.. My guess is that budget constraints kept this pretty simple. I wish I had seen this transcend movie you speak of. It sounds like it has great depth. I doubt Ray would want to flesh this out to that extent. It probably was far more work than he imagined! Can’t deny your point has Merritt. It would be nice if there was a little more care for the aesthetics of just about everything these days. Really makes you appreciate the gems (Transcend). Still looking forward to seeing the movie. It’s hard to tell people to read Ray’s book. It will be much easier to show the movie! Sadly yes, a little like eating Taco Bell.
by Carl Borrowman
I think you may be right about the budget… I also think they probably had a lot of fun in making this and just kept it light on purpose, not really caring what the majority of people would think, which is their prerogative and one I can definitely relate to. I can only imagine how much fun it would be to see or actually be with this group goofing together off camera, it must have been a blast.
Transcendent Man? You can view a preview here or the whole thing if you pay… I think I watched it on Netflix streaming at no extra charge: http://transcendentman.com/watch-now/ … As far as his books, The Age of Spiritual Machines is still my favorite… as far as encompassing the general concept (not necessarily the Singularity alone, but progress in general), Abundance (Diamandis, Kotler 2012) is currently my favorite. Transcendent Man just had a simplicity to it that didn’t need anything extra to keep the viewer engaged and get the message across, but I still want to see this and want to support everyone behind it.
by Bri
Yes, I agree. Must have been a blast to make at times. They look like college buddies, messing around in media lab!
by Carl Borrowman
Okay, just finished watching it and it isn’t nearly as embarrassing as the trailer makes it out to be. Ray co-directed it, and overall I think he did a fairly good job, though perhaps a director AI upgrade couldn’t have hurt (looking forward to seeing that version in a few years!). Still looking forward to 2039, and I have to thank him for fleshing it out a bit more. Keep up the great work Ray.
by kilgatron
Your criticism is clearly off-base. The vignettes aren’t ridiculous to me, and your cry for transcendence is redundant. The masses aren’t going to watch this movie, for the most part. Make your own movie.
by Carl Borrowman
Your opinion is your own and you are welcome to it. I simply gave some feedback based upon my own opinions, which is probably part of the purpose of this thread. If the vignettes seem to you like the best possible work that could have been done then perhaps that is the best you have experienced. I’ve seen much better and know it can be done.
By “masses” I obviously don’t mean the same volume of audience as is in the theater now for Dark Knight Rises, but rather the majority of people who will watch this film that are not as knowledgeable about the topic as those with a more scientific bent. I don’t need to make my own movie, I already thoroughly enjoyed Transcendent Man, which I thought was much better, and stated why.
I would suggest that if you have high praise for the movie and think it was perfect in every way possible that you go ahead and state that instead of focusing on my feedback as to why I think it could have been better, I’m sure they will be pleased.
by PMK
Glad to read down below that you found your skepticism was largely unwarranted. I too felt some uneasiness after watching the trailer, but if the vignettes are actually pretty good, I guess I have no reason to miss this. :)
by Adam
I’ve been waiting for this for a long time as well, and initially was turned off by the second life graphics. I think overall the message came across loud and clear. Maybe this can be the premise for a series by a major production house like BBC or PBS to give the genre the look, feel and script it deserves. Check out Blackmirror by BBC4 if you get a chance, it is an amazing series.
