I just saw the movie and I have to say....I enjoyed it!! Kurzweil's stuff seems to go well, if not better, when obviously examined alongside his other related stuff....for those who, if they choose, to ONLY see his movies -- obviously, it pays to see both Transcendent Man and this one side-by-side, to get the best possible idea concerning the vision.

What I enjoyed about this movie, was seeing other people interviewed that didn't make it into the previous movie, like Bill Joy, Martine Rothblatt, Aubrey de Grey, and really just a host of people that honestly should have been there in the first place, especially since they play such key roles in all the things Kurzweil talks about.

As for the "plot"....I honestly enjoyed it -- perhaps this is from the eyes of someone who has intensively read his works before watching the movies, but I liked it.....is that EXACTLY how the future will untold? We'll see....It's easy to get turned off by the B-movie plotline, which plays like something you'd typically see on Sci-Fi channel, but the plotline itself was never really the main point I feel....the plotline with Ramona made me think of the Molly and George bits at the end of each chapter in his books - they do a good job of summerizing and creating an "in-a-nutshell" image, but there is much more to it then that. My point is, I wasn't placing too much into it because I felt it wasn't really "the point" so much as just an expression of how the Singularity can be viewed as...it's the whole picture, interviews (more so actually) and all that really make up the vision of the future through the eyes of Ray Kurzweil. That said, I still enjoyed it, and especially enjoyed Tony Robbins presence, who in general, is pleasant to watch.

Critiques? Well....I wasn't too bothered by the after-effects, because again, that wasn't the main thing -- the production values obviously weren't very high, and I feel that's why people can be superficially turned off...it's like the B-movie plotline -- for those who take it too deeply and seriously, they will laugh because of how cheesy they may feel it is...however, that's superficial, because again, it's not the set-design or anything that really matters but the genuinely plausible ideas and everything that sets this movie up. That said, I still wish there were better production values in this movie if possible, because, it seemed almost like something from the 1990's in how almost flashy it was....of course, one looking for something more visually mature, can look at Transcendent Man.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie and feel, if you are only 'ever' going to watch the movies, you definitely need to see both side-by-side to get the best possible picture of Kurzweil's vision....of course, reading the books and everything else will make it more so.

All the more reason for him to have interviewed a musician/artist. Comments in this section aren't about him, but about the film.

Too bad there aren't Conversations with people representing popular culture - art, music, spirituality, etc. I know Kurzweil is a left brain dude, but I hope there's more to life then that!

I enjoyed the movie until Tinker Bell started flying around. Probably could've used a good screenplay writer.

Unlike others, I ordered and received exactly what I wanted on time (the deluxe edition). I had to weigh my slight disappointment with the movie with the realization that the movie was not made for Singulatarians who know all the ins and outs, the time lines and the arguments for and against. It was made for the masses who would say, "WTF" if asked what the Singularity was.

The second disc was fantastic - how the film was made (interesting to me) and the interviews. I only wish there could have been more since these were the "meat" of the movie. Still, good attempt at explaining a complex iissue.

OK - 3hours later, I have received an email from support@singularity.com saying that their vendor shipped me the wrong product and the 2-disc set is on the way. So my issue is solved and I am happy. Looking forward to getting the extended interviews. The email msg was a bit impersonal, not mentioning my name or order number, so I am assuming that this was some kind of mixup that may have affected lots of orders. But its fixed!

thanks, Terry Slade

I have been looking forward to the film for a long time. I list it on my giant list of documentary films here: http://www.ionet.net/~tslade/docufilm.htm

I ordered it right away as soon as the website said it could be ordered. I received a msg saying the discs were all backordered. But the DVD showed up a few days later, this Tuesday 09/04/12. I was very excited to get it and watched it that night. Incredible film, as expected. I will watch it again tomorrow night. I agree with another comment here that the presence of Tony Robbins was not a good sign. And I'm sure there is lots we could criticize about the film, but I try to get whatever there is to get from a film, and there is plenty to think about here. I thought the whole
drama/docu thing with the actress/AI was well-done. Very interesting film for sure. One of the most mind-blowing films I have seen.

But I do have a major disappointment, which is what brought me here. I am sure that I will be even more interested in the extended interviews on the extra disc. That is why I paid extra to order the Deluxe 2-disc edition. When I excitedly opened the package, I found that it contained the single-disc edition. So I emailed the support address right away. I got a response right back from a "robot" saying we got your message and will respond within 48 hours, although we try to respond sooner. It is now 2 days later and I have received no response. So I started looking around to see if I could find a phone number. Nothing on the film's website. So I looked at the box and looked up the address - although is says Kurzweil Technologies, it is actually Acutrack, a company that makes and sends out DVDs. I called them and they were a bit puzzled at why I was calling them, since they don't do customer service. But she said she would research it get back to me. That was a couple of hours ago and I need to go to work soon. So I am hoping that someone can look into this. Why is there no response at support@singularity.com ??? I really want to get the 2-disc set that I paid for. Please tell me how we can proceed to fix this.

thanks,
Terry Slade

...yeah, I enjoyed the interviews and bonus material more than the movie, but I think you still need to watch the movie first to understand Ray's points during the discussions... As a long time fan of Ray's I had secretly grown really board of all of Ray's interviews as they started to sound like a broken record (at least for me and after hearing them so many times and same basic message). It was nice to watch Ray during the interviews hold back from going on his own rants or point making...(yea! I was honestly proud of him). I noticed him trying hard to hold back a few times... almost giving in to that self indulgent temptation to always play the teacher... anyhow... I enjoyed the interviews and style of having Ray lead his basic push of his own ideas through these other experts. I was hoping to see some details about how Ray himself is preparing for surviving until the singularity by looking at his vitamin and heath related efforts to live forever (take us along for what he thinks is working or has the best chance....so we can try it also). For me there were a few extra cheesy moments with some of the interviews as you could see their posed set of awards in the background ($20 worth of clear acrylic plaques, etc) with Aubrey Gray and had the feeling he had just dyed his beard to look young...ray also with some hair dye going on... and some of Aubrey Gray's (btw, who I like and much appreciate!) assumptions already blown out of the water by a ted video just posted http://www.ted.com/talks/mina_bissell_experiments_that_point_to_a_new_understanding_of_cancer.html so we have a long way to go and our A=B and B=C, thus A=C line of reasoning is often Epic Fail when there are dozens of these holding up a theory and an earlier one breaks down. Regardless, I enjoyed the movie and bonus interviews and hope some of these great ideas leak out and spread. I do agree with some posts here that the irony of making this movie easier to download and use would have been nice to fix and you would think Ray must have dozens of web geniuses that would work for free just to put him on the resume. Proof there is still a lot of work left to do....

Big fan of Ray and his ideas, but I thought the movie was off. The bits with Ramona were cringe-worthy, at best. The whole thing came off as very amateurish, the timeline wasn't consistent, there was no sense of continuity. The singularity will remain on the fringe of the mainstream if this is the best marketing job Ray can muster!

Unfortunately, I must agree. I paid expecting to start downloading (which will take a bit in itself), and instead I may be able to watch it by this time tomorrow. It is a poor model. That said, I do appreciate Ray's work and still look forward to the film with anticipation.

Yeah, and Alvin Toffler was embarassingly wrong about most of his predictions in "Future Shock." And Alan Dershowitz is, well, a lawyer. Need I say more?

P.S. I'm not a big fan of Colin Powell, who was featured in Transcendent Man either, but I bought it anyway.

Your system should be automated for download if you are going to make us pay for it. If I bought a digital movie any other place, I would be able to begin downloading immediately, not have to wait 24 hours just to get the download link. What an utter disgrace from a website that claims the singularity is practically on our doorstep....

Your opinion is your own and you are welcome to it. I simply gave some feedback based upon my own opinions, which is probably part of the purpose of this thread. If the vignettes seem to you like the best possible work that could have been done then perhaps that is the best you have experienced. I've seen much better and know it can be done.

By "masses" I obviously don't mean the same volume of audience as is in the theater now for Dark Knight Rises, but rather the majority of people who will watch this film that are not as knowledgeable about the topic as those with a more scientific bent. I don't need to make my own movie, I already thoroughly enjoyed Transcendent Man, which I thought was much better, and stated why.

I would suggest that if you have high praise for the movie and think it was perfect in every way possible that you go ahead and state that instead of focusing on my feedback as to why I think it could have been better, I'm sure they will be pleased.

Excellent! I loved it. I was somewhat guarded in my expectations, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Some of the graphics are a bit rough, but the movie was quite entertaining and it got the message across. This is a very good movie to show family and friends to introduce the concepts of the Technological Singularity and Transhumanism. I will be watching this again soon.

I've been waiting for this for a long time as well, and initially was turned off by the second life graphics. I think overall the message came across loud and clear. Maybe this can be the premise for a series by a major production house like BBC or PBS to give the genre the look, feel and script it deserves. Check out Blackmirror by BBC4 if you get a chance, it is an amazing series.

Scott, it really sucks if Ray and his crew miss out on money from people pirating The Singularity is Near. However, I think a lot of people who pirate shows like this one are highly likely to go on to pay for more content, especially if it is easier and faster than piracy alternatives. The digital distribution system that is delivering the show has issues (a lot of comments about it here) which encourages a P2P mirror. All that aside, I am really proud that Ray and his team published this sans DRM, and I can't wait to spend another $15 on his next volume. Maybe next time it will be streamed directly to our visual cortex!
Shouldn't all intellectual property be accessible to everyone instantly? Won't that be a milestone of the singularity?

I would like to see all these wonderful future technologies become reality but when there is difficulty downloading a movie online it makes me that much more skeptical.

Ah!, I know what the https issue was about now: I had used my iPad, and forgot that it displays a lock icon instead of the "https" prefix. (pretty foolish of me, actually.)

Still, I'm looking forward to seeing PayPal as a payment option.

If the "desire to breed like rabbits" were going to derail the singularity, then wouldn't population growth be on a higher order than technological growth? It's not; population growth has been *slower* than exponential since 1970.

Allan,
The Singularity will not be "blocked" by the items you listed. Ray Kurzweil showed evidence in his book TSIN that neither war nor recession nor depression had any significant impact on exponentially accelerating technological change. The fruits of such exponential change WILL NOT be limited to "a tiny fraction of a percent of humanity." Sounds like you've swallowed the politically correct global warming dogma hook, line, and sinker.
