Can anyone explain why overbearing arrogance and swagger is so prevalent in Rap/Hip Hop. Is this a prerequisite for the style? Even relatively “good” rap, like that made by Mike Eagle, doesn’t seem to deviate from this.

When I read this article out loud it sounds lyrical: “this form of vocal improvisation is associated with a unique functional reallocation of brain activity in the prefrontal cortex.”

@de Broglie Hiphop is not rap. Understand the culture before you critique it. the spoken word from our culture is just 1 of the elements. HipHop itself is the ability to transform all subjects an objects

As an amateur lyricist/songwriter, I find what freestyle rappers do amazing and beyond my mental abilities; the point of the news post is to look at the creative process, rather than the music.

Rap music will pass and while it may always persist in some backwards places, barring a collapse of civilization, it will never regain its former levels. Much like illiteracy. People do seem to outgrow it.

Well, that’s a pretty uninformed and petty reaction. The near visceral reaction some people have against rap(specifically) seems to stem from a sort of soft-bigotry. People who dislike rap will go out of their way to let others know how loathsome it is. How odd. It’s just music. I write music. While I don’t write hip hop music, I’m absolutely inspired by certain beats or certain creative vocal inflections or rhymes. As the article points out, creativity is about lowering judgmental inhibitions. Maybe if you made a conscious effort to try and be moved by rap(there IS some great stuff out there…look beyond the radio) your own creative endeavors could benefit. Give it a chance…
