The sharper display resolution on the very-high-resolution “retina display” on Apple’s iPhone 4 and the new  iPad is driving gadget manufacturers to adopt new manufacturing techniques for displays.

Applied Materials is using indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) instead of amorphous silicon to makes it easier and cheaper to build large displays with extra-dense pixels (IGZO may also be used for iPads).

Applied Materials also says that IGZO should also make flexible displays more practical to manufacture.
