I am active in virtual worlds, more than one of them. I use the same identity (my avatar name, and when possible, the same appearance) in most of them. My name/avatar IS my online identity - and I have many friends who only know me by that name - my digital identity.
Interestingly, one of the big social networks which many people use, and have an active account on (FaceBook) does not recognize the reality of a digital identity. I (as gray.beam) had an account, which they canceled because it was not a 'real name'. I explained that it was more real to the people I was interacting with on-line than my real world name, and that it WAS my digital identity - myself in the virtual / digital worlds. They refused to acknowledge the fact that my avatar was a real identity - and refused to restore the account. Their policy is 'real names' only - however they define them
I had to introduce myself via my real life name to many of my friends, and in some was re-start a friendship with them. Not that they or I had a problem adapting - but they still see me as my avatar in the virtual worlds, and I suspect many of them still think of my by my avatar name - not the name FaceBook forced me to use.

I have many avatars. My web site is one and 'speaks' for me, though most of it is 15 years old. My children and everyone who 'listens' to what I say, and passes it on, and therefore, the whole world is my avatar. Of course it would be interesting to have a discussion with 'someone' who took my previous messages to heart.
