Who would have thought, that a sponge would need to think? Excuse me if I act poetic.

Again, look at the tree spider. Tiny brain. Yet such complex behavior. They have to coordinate eight legs. Jumping from one undulating platform(leaf or a banch) to another. They hunt, so that means they have to anticipate there opponent, in real time. Both those actions require that they formulate " hallucinations" ( hallucinating robots article) or hypothetical scenarios in real time. Which for the insect world, can be lighting quick. It's why I don't think we will need whole brain replication to make an AI smarter than us. Take that tiny spider brain. Diffuse it in a large sponge body. Reduce the level of demand to a sponges . All a sponge really needs is a fraction of a tree spider brain. Still something is causing these proto synapsis to evolve and be conserved. They gotta be doing something. ( maybe square pants knows!).

Interesting, Alastair. We know that trees also communicate (and thus compute) via chemicals to other trees. And this just in: Insects use plants to deliver chemical messages to future insects

This reminds me of the late and much mised, Professor John Lorber (Sheffield) and his paper fisrt published in the Lancet "Is Our Brain Really Necessary". He had a brilliant Mathematics patient, with hardly any detectable brain, only 5 grams of cerebral fluid bag tissue, surrounding the cranium. Dr, John's research revealed many othe 'post-mortem' patients with the same advanced Hydroecephalitis that functioned perfectly normally to the end.

" Is there a metaphor here? What proto form of intelligence has been developed in us, homo sapiens, that we may not be aware of, and itself may never develop into a functioning form, but see fruition in whatever replaces us?" Perhaps those sponges only need the saline cerebral fluid of our vast oceans???

Did other animals with nervous systems evolve from sponges? If so, it shows that sponges did indeed evolve a nervous system... just not all of them. :-)

Synesthesia: Yes, it seems like a new way to visualize and process information (and maybe learn) more effectively.

"What proto form of intelligence has been developed in use, homo sapiens,"

How about changing that to "...developed in *us*..." to make it a little less confusing.
