3rd IAA Planetary Defense Conference
Protecting our planet from impacts by asteroids and comets
The International Academy of Astronautics will hold its third conference “Gathering for Impact!” from 15-19 April, 2013 in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
Papers are solicited in the following areas:
- Planetary Defense
- Recent Progress & Plans
- NEO Discovery
- NEO Characterization
- Mitigation Techniques & Missions
- Impact Effects that Inform Warning, Mitigation & Costs
- Consequence Management & Education
The conference will include an exercise where participants will simulate the decision-making process for developing deflection and civil defense responses to a hypothetical asteroid threat.

Oh goody!
Another opportunity for my standard response to such activities:
At the risk of sounding glib and facile, not necessarily in that order, I say let us all wrap ourselves in the warm, comforting mantle of geological time and get on with solutions to issues that are a much more immediate threat to our species’ survival.
BTW, from whence the $$$ for these conferences?
