Bionic brain chips could overcome paralysis

An electronic bypass to a broken connection in the spinal cord may be possible in the future, research at the University of Washington and elsewhere suggests.

Electronic chips would be implanted in the relevant regions of the brain to record neural activity, a decoder would decipher the neural chatter to figure out what the brain wants the body to do, and these messages would be relayed wirelessly to electrodes that deliver a pulse of electricity to stimulate the muscles into action.
