In the world’s first remote-control brain tumor operation, a Calgary surgeon used a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided robotic arm to remove a complex brain tumor.

Using two mechanical hands and real-time MRI to see microscopic details, the system, developed by the University of Calgary, allows a surgeon to control the robot at a computer workstation. Skills required are similar to those developed in video games: hand-eye coordination and highly developed spatial orientation.
