The Boss Is Robotic, and Rolling Up Behind You
September 7, 2010
Mobile robots are now being used in hundreds of hospitals nationwide as the eyes, ears and voices of doctors who cannot be there in person.
They are being rolled out in workplaces, allowing employees in disparate locales to communicate more easily and letting managers supervise employees from afar. And they are being tested as caregivers in assisted-living centers.

What’s really going to blow people’s minds is when this technology is married to 3D television technology. Gone will be the need for clunky robots and soon to be obsolete hardware. Instead all that will be needed is some sort of projecting medium.
This development is pretty significant. These telepresence bots will have much the same effect as widespread computer adoption did in the 1990′s. Namely the productivity gains will be impressive. No longer will the best and brightest of their particular fields be limited by time and space considerations. Doctors, in particular, will benefit from the proliferation of these devices. While, at the moment, they are limited by the scarcity of these products, a hospital fully outfitted with these tools would benefit as doctors could do their rounds without necessarily having to physically be at the hospital. Also, as was demonstrated in the article, doctors could be on hand to “eyeball” a crisis situation as it unfolds as opposed to relying on relayed information via telephone.
