The company that spooked the world
August 6, 2012
The “Cyber Security Evaluation Centre” set up in England by Huawei, a Chinese telecom giant, in 2010 marks a new way of persuading purchasers, and the British government, that equipment from the manufacturer that runs it can be trusted, The Economist reports.
It operates in close cooperation with GCHQ, Britain’s signals-intelligence agency. Its security-cleared staff, some of whom used to work for GCHQ, are responsible for making sure that the networking equipment and software that the Chinese firm wishes to sell to British telecoms companies are reliable, will only do what customers want them to do, and cannot be exploited by cybercriminals or foreign spies — including Chinese ones.

What I would do is getting the companies tech only partially spread through your intel community and then start feeding stupid false info to that part of your intel community for a time and observe the Chinese and Chinas reaction in general. If after releasing something crazy but trustworthy they freak out and you notice them freak out then the game is up and the Chinese have explaining to do. Very humiliating explaining to do.

… and yet, somehow, is anyone really convinced? It will be interesting to see at some point in the future, what trickery was used to finesse the information out to the foreign spies. Is this just part of a longer range plan, the opening gambit to lure the target in to a sense of complacency and establish a foothold?
